Why Kids Need Yoga Too!

Those of us who have had the pleasure of experiencing a yoga class or two can attest to the amazing benefits it can bring.

You know that feeling of exhilaration, full stop inner peace and calm…and even wanting to snuggle under your covers (and perhaps nap) in bed right after that gentle flow class!!

Our children live in a hurry-up world of busy parents (I raise my hand-guilty as charged), video games/computer screens (waaaaaayyyy too much these days), school pressure, competitive sports etc. We usually don’t tend to think of these activities as stressful for our children, but often they are.

Yoga can help counter those everyday pressures. Incorporating yoga into your children’s routine will help keep them moving, feel more self-assured and learn to calm their emotions.

Yoga at an early age creates inner awareness and self-esteem in a physically non-competitive way. Children acquire enormous benefits from yoga. They need to be able to recognize and listen to their inner voice, regulate emotions and learn how to cope with daily life whatever that may bring.

Here are some of the benefits of yoga on kids:

  • Stress relief
  • Anxiety management
  • Emotional regulation
  • Improved focus
  • Better sleep patterns
  • Increased muscle strength
  • Increased flexibility
  • Boosts self-esteem
  • Improved balance and coordination
  • Improved awareness

What do kids yoga classes look like?

First off, we roll our mats and jump right into our yoga adventure with some fun games to loosen up and warm up those muscles.

We then make getting fit even more fun for children such as trying fun animal yoga poses and letting the yoga magic begin. Some examples of fun animal poses we do in class:

  • Cat Cow yoga pose
  • Downward dog yoga pose
  • Lion pose
  • Butterfly pose
  • Frog pose
  • Snake pose

Who knew yoga class was secretly imitating your favorite animal! Just think about this when you are deep into a stretch in your next class…am I a snake…or a lion…maybe a fish?

Lastly after coming back from their fun yoga poses, we take the time to simply lie on the floor to relax and practice our nice big breaths!

At b well holistic studio, we are very fortunate to offer small group classes limited to 6 children.

What to bring to class:

  • A labelled water bottle
  • Comfortable clothing
  • A face mask to enter and leave the studio. Children may remove their masks once they are settled onto their mats.

All classes are age-appropriate and no prior yoga experience is required.
